Khyunglung Ngulkhar

(pronounced: Khyung-lung dngul-mkhar) - "Silver Palace of Garuda Valley

Khynglung Ngulkhar

The ethnologist, mountaineer and author Bruno Baumann discovered in 2004 during the first expedition of the Sutley-Canon, the traces of a pre-Buddhist kingdom in Tibet. Here flourished once highly civilized culture of the Shang Shung kingdom. This extinct culture gave a major impetus to the Tibetan Buddhism.
He came upon a valley with hot springs and a mighty fortress - the Silver Palace in Garuda where the Shang Shung kings until the 7th Century resided.

We deliberately chose this name. He should be an appeal of don't gradually perish the cultural treasures.
Our sincere thanks go to Bruno Baumann, who gave us lots of information besides his pictures he made available to us.

With our site, we want arouse interest for one of the oldest domesticated breeds, the

Do Khyi

There are also other names, such as Tibetan Mastiff, Tibetan Mastiff, Tibetan Mastif, Tibetaanse Mastiff, Dogue du Tibet. These are all names for the same race, the Do Khyi. Translated, the meaning of the name is "dog on leash". It is the most biggest mountain dog and guard dog of the Himalaya.

About us

We are a couple that go unnoticed four years ago during a visit to the dog show in Dortmund and the club show of the KTR infected with a virus. After one year of incubation, the virus developed its full effect. Symptoms include inter alia:
  • decreasing interest in long-distance travel by plane
  • compulsive grip on a leash when leaving the house
  • exhibitionistic tendencies that lead to regular visits to exhibition halls
  • Control of biological processes of reproduction in dogs
The virus occurs mainly in the immediate vicinity of dog owners with their Do Khyi. Once infected it comes to acquiring at least one representative dog is a must. What this resulted in us that can read those interested here:

How man comes to the dogs?

Well, you buy a house and closes the deal with his wife, that there is only a house for her, if there is a dog for him - Currency: Best friend of man.

Has it worked?

And how! After a long search and so much luck we have found a breeder!
Well, well, not around the corner, but in Belgium. Because I always want to go there, so why not look at puppies.
After eight weeks, then pure luck, I have my dog Hridayesh in our home. He seems to feel quite well, he is doing all sorts of mischief into the house and garden. All dog beds, blankets and other cuddly were  bad investments, we could save hundreds of euros. The favorite place is tiled floor.
The saying "As the owner, just as the dog," he seems to know, because he developed a pronounced stubborn head - sorry, a strong self-competence. (Must be sound even slightly challenging and positive).

How women comes to the dog?

At the bed of puppies she developed the idea, she has to have necessarily  a blue female. And that what woman has got in her head, that always happens.
A year later, we got the bitch just around the corner - oh no, not so at the Do Khyi. Our Bandhura comes from Slovakia.
Since their first walk together in the snow on the way back home, Hridayesh is falling in love with Bandhura. Funny, how animal and human relationships are similar. Both are a team through thick and thin, through good and bad deeds. Especially when they are thinking about mischief,  a literary tendency with Wilhelm Busch is not undeniable. Well, at least she occupied not only his favorite places at once and tolerate no opposition, no, she utilizes the expensive dog bed - what a luck.

Behavior of our dogs

While Bandhura behaves in this kind, that we can get the impression, that she would liked to listen to every word, she just know sometimes not, as they should do it, Hridayesh has remained his opinion faithfully, "Your way to me is just as far as mine to you and you wants everything. Also here again parallels to real life showed, he is indeed the master of the house, but he is also much more sensitive. And what ever happens, even she is making the decision.

Both are in agreement, that their mistress is to defended against any potential danger, if only, because she wakes up in the morning both dogs with soft touchings, and because just from point of view from the dogs, the moment of the day is perfect for that.
They agree, that cyclists need not necessarily go along so close to our fence, that they "tells" them each time to keep distance.
Both want two walks every day, devoid of any discussion, because one wants to do something for the nose and fitness.
They both love all those who belong to the family, but they have a basically distrust to all strangers.
More we do not want to describe the behavior of the breed, there are a sufficient number of pages on which much can be learned. We have read them all and yet every day we learn something new about our dogs, because, while our two dogs belonging to the same breed, however, represent  very different personalities. Special features are also stored in each dog.
What our dogs have not read certainly, are treatises on all dog training as puppies. With their ability to ignore goodies, if they are offered at extortionate intent, they have taken different instructors to despair. No, anyone who decides to our race, in addition to authority requires stamina, patience and sensitivity. Behind the daunting facade hides a sensitive soul.

"Man can live without a dog - but it's not worth it!"

The philosophy of the actor Heinz Rühmann has reached a whole new dimension for us. Imperceptibly, our dogs have become the central focal point of our lives. The daily, weekly and annual plan depends on dates of dogshows, dogwalks in our club and many other dates, such as breeders meetings, seminars, etc.
And now, after three years of domestic Do Khyi intensive course, we have decided to start with breeding.

Our breeding goal

With the preoccupation with the Do Khyi also the learning about Tibet is associated. There is much to read on the Web, including controversy over the origin and meaning of the Do Khyi for the development of dog breeds. This has a secondary meaning for us.
On the surface we see that the breed is threatened. Do Khyi belongs to the heritage of the Tibetans. And like many other cultural treasures also, the Chinese occupiers of Tibet are trying to eliminate this breed, even these dogs to change  beyond recognition. Image examples of million-dollar soft toys resulting mutants can be found on the web

Some european breeders see themselves as designers of this Breed.  We saw dogs with similarity to  Ovtscharka or to Newfoundland. And even if it remains close to the original, increasingly there is a tendency to breed bigger, heavier animals. We can hardly imagine, that these giants in over 5000 meters above sea make its work. We have seen the first Do Khyi with strange colors already at dog shows, it is a question of time, when Sable is enriched with other fun colors.

We face opposite, our main objective is to maintain the Do Khyi. Our guideline is the FCI-standard but also  available material about early imports. Here you will find examples in terms of size, proportions and weight. Descriptions of behavior we also found in these sources.
In summary, this leads to our ideal of a Do Khyi, regardless of temporary fads.
The realization of this goal is increasingly difficult because the distances between like-minded people in Europe are very large, quite apart from existing language barriers. But we made the positive experience, that there more breeders than were initially expected, who agree with this philosophy.

Whether and how we are be able to realize the goal long-term, only time will tell. Like-minded people are welcome here, because nothing is more stimulating than the exchange of ideas and joint commitment.
We want to convert anybody, but we want also be not converted.
